Mapping the West Loop’s development boom
Chicago’s West Loop and Fulton Market District have rapidly transformed from industrial hubs into the city’s most active development zones. Once dominated by meatpacking and wholesale businesses, the area now boasts luxury apartment towers, chef-driven restaurants, boutique hotels, and corporate offices for major companies like Google and McDonald’s. This transformation, while fueling economic growth, has also led to rising commercial rents and concerns about the displacement of local businesses. In response, city officials are advocating for affordable retail spaces alongside mandated affordable housing to ensure the neighborhood remains accessible to all.
